Why now ?
If there was ever a time we needed to be reminded of the wisdom of the past, now is that time.
Inspired by our podcast Into the Mythic we want to offer a live interactive experience this winter. To recreate the magic that has taken place over thousands of years when people come together to listen to meaningful stories.
What we’ll be discussing ..
You’ll hear about heroic warriors laid low by mortal flaws, about the mind bending possibilities of transformation, and about what happens when supernatural beings meddle in the affairs of humans.
We approach Irish myths and legends in a fresh, dynamic way - bringing new life to old stories and reinvigorating our indigenous storytelling tradition.
Each week we will focus on a story or a character from Irish Mythology. Casting aside what we think we know about Irish myths and legends, we will help you to listen with fresh ears.
What will the experience be like ?
We will start each session with a story from our wonderful storyteller Pol O Colman. Using reflections and prompts from Leeanne and Pol you will then be invited to explore your own response to the stories, to seek new meanings, and to find connections through the universal themes.
We will be telling stories about the wisest man in ancient Ireland, asking what happened in the Samhain 'time out of time' and trying to understand why the famous warrior Cuhulainn was so powerful.
These stories were told primarily as entertainment - people have enjoyed listening to them and chatting about them afterwards for thousands of years , the experience was supposed to be fun as well as meaningful. And that is exactly our hope and intention for this course !
Who is this for ?
Everyone is welcome - whether you know a lot or a little about Irish myths there's a place for you in this gathering. You can just sit back and listen or you are welcome to get involved in the discussion. No pressure !
What Irish Mythology has to offer us now…
Irish Myths and Legends have endured for thousands of years, they are our links back to an ancient way of being. Connecting us to a time when the people of this land understood how to take their place in the intricate web of life.
They take us back to a time when people took for granted that there was an overlap between the human and the divine, the mortal and the supernatural. A time when people believed it was possible to inhabit different dimensions. A time when it was understood that humans were just one small part of a complex, living world. These stories show that the people who first told them knew that they were in relationship with the land and the non-human creatures around them, with the seasons and the weather, and with powerful forces beyond their comprehension.
These myths and legends have survived for thousands of years in different forms and within the versions we now have there are glimmers of the potency and magic that flowed through them when they were first told in the distant past.
Bring an open mind and an open heart and let these stories unfold in you !
